A trip into the Namib Desert is the biggest highlight of this tour. The name of the Namib Desert comes from the word Nama, which means “vast places”, the perfect description for this arid, spectacular landscape. Some of the tallest dunes in the world can be found in the Namib, varying in colour, from striking orange to shimmering pink. To the north of the desert, you will find the Kaokoveld, where we offer a specific tour, while to the south is the South African Karoo semi-desert.

Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s most popular attractions. The name Sossusvlei translates to “dead end marsh” because the dunes rise up and stop the Tsauchab River from flowing any further.
With towering red sand dunes, a white salt pan and the picturesque Deadvlei, you will never forget Sossusvlei. Not only is this a dream 4×4 destination; it is also a photographer’s paradise! The morning and evening light provides a special kind of setting.

Sossusvlei is in the Namib Desert, which all on its own is a majestic location for a 4×4 tour of Namibia. With its huge dunes and startling landscape, this is a uniquely coastal desert. The roar of the Atlantic Ocean follows you along the way and the windswept plains opposite the ocean make Sossusvlei an unforgettable destination.

Along the way, you will also see Walvis Bay (Walvisbaai). The bay is a unique safe haven for passing boats, with its deep water harbour providing safety from the wild ocean. If you are a keen fisherman, time spent in Walvisbaai is a must.

The animals of the Namib Desert are rare but a great reason to visit. Reptiles, birds and beetles are among the most commonly seen creatures, while Oryxes, Springboks and Ostrich can also be occasionally spotted. The animals you might catch a glimpse of have adapted to the desert conditions and become an important part of this diverse and unique ecosystem.

Cross Over Africa’s guided 4×4 Namibia tour is ideal for any traveller wanting to experience Namibia in all its majesty.

Namibia is an off-the-beaten-track kind of country and we have designed our various tours to suit those looking for an adventure they would never find elsewhere. Namibia is undeniably a top African safari destination and this tour is ideal for anyone wanting more than just a taste of this quiet landscape.

When planning your trip to Africa, and to Namibia in particular, you need to be aware of the climate. Not all seasons are ideal for travelling to Namibia. As it is an arid landscape, and during the summers, the heat can be intense! So plan your trip according to the best time of the year.

  • December to March: During these summer months, the humidity can become unbearable and rain is the norm. Most summer afternoons end with a thunderstorm.
  • April to May: This is the best time to visit Namibia; the days are cooler, clear and filled with fresh green vegetation. While this is the best time of the year to visit, you will find that the country isn’t overcrowded with tourists.
  • June to August: These are Namibia’s winter months, but as with any African nation, the weather is never truly cold, at least during the day. But the nights can get very cold, especially in the desert. You can also expect the climate to be very dry.
  • September to October: While the winter is over, and the days are getting hot again, the landscape is still exceptionally dry. Regardless of this, you will find that this is the best time to see Namibian animals.

Practical Information for The Kanaan Tour:

  • Slow and easy does it, don’t rush your Namibia tour.
  • The Namibian Dollar is the same as the South African Rand when you are looking to exchange money. This makes the Namibian holiday quite affordable.
  • Namibians drive on the left and pass on the right, just like Australia, the UK and South Africa.
  • Most Namibians speak more than two languages; English, German, and Afrikaans are widely spoken.
  • For the most part, Namibia is quite safe. Unlike South Africa where you always have to be aware, Namibia doesn’t have much crime. That being said, you should always be vigilant.
