Namibia is a very beautiful and mysterious country that has some of the most amazing natural occurrences found in Africa. For those who don’t know much about Namibia, here are some interesting facts about this country:

The Country is received its name from the desert it is home to, the Namib Desert. The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world. There are plenty of tour companies that explore the majestic dunes of the Namib Desert.

Though Namibia is mostly desert country, it has the largest population of free roaming wild cheetahs in the world. There are an estimated 3000 free roaming wild cheetahs that call Namibia their home. Because of the large population, Cheetahs are more common than in South Africa and they are also seen in larger numbers.

There is a variety of elephant, that can be found in only 2 countries worldwide, that call the desert home. These Desert Elephants look anatomically similar to other elephant species with the exception that Desert Elephants have a smaller body mass, have longer legs and also wider feet. These changes make it possible for Desert Elephants to travel across the dunes in search of water.

Namibia is the first country in the world to have environmental conservation as part of their National Constitution. This resulted in many community-based tourism companies and initiatives to be started. All of the Community initiatives provide monetary and social benefits to the community and creates an authentic experience and feel for tourists.

An amazing fact about Namibia is that it is also home to the largest population of free roaming Black Rhinos in the world. This is great to see since most of the Rhinos in South Africa have been taken out of the wild and put into conservation areas. There is just something about seeing a wild Black Rhino in an untamed and unaffected environment that would give you goosebumps.

The Sossusvlei Dunes are some of the highest dunes in the world and the highest of the Sossusvlei dunes is Big Daddy, a dune that stretches an astounding 325m high. Another dune, Dune 45, is also the most photographed dune in the world. The hike up these tremendous dunes can be extremely exhausting and daunting to climb, even more so than climbing a mountain, but the views that you get from the top of them are some of the most beautiful and memorable in the world.
